Spotlight2020 has been an especially chaotic time--we began the year with geopolitical tensions between Iran and the US, then moved into an unprecedented global pandemic with COVID-19. In the spring, racially motivated police brutality reached its breaking point in the US, with citizens taking to the streets to remind the world that Black Lives Matter. And ever ongoing, we are bearing witness to the increasing number of abnormal weather conditions all around the world.
What all this chaos brings to light are the underlying issues that have plagued our societies for longer than most of us have lived, systemic problems that require extra-systemic solutions. Social justice movements are voluntary collective actions, large or small, that fight for a more equitable and just relationship between individuals and the societies we live in.
These movements may look different based on what cause they fight for--racial justice, economic justice, climate justice...the list could go on. But what unites them, for me, is the fight that goes into naming, challenging, and changing systems of power that drive society.
What is social justice for you?
2020년에는 혼란스러운 사건들이 연달아 일어나고 있습니다. 1월에는 이란과 미국의 전쟁위기에 잠시 불안감을 느끼다, 이 불안감이 잠잠해졌나 싶더니 COVID-19이라는 전례 없던 세계적 대유행이 시작되었습니다. 이번 봄, 미국에서는 오랜시간 끓고있던 인종차별적인 공권력 남용의 문제들이 넘쳐흘러 많은 사람들이 “흑인의 삶도 소중하다" (Black Lives Matter) 를 외치며 대도시 속에서 시위를 벌이기도 했었습니다. 호주 산불부터, 지금 시각에도 한반도에 내리고 있는 많은 양의 비까지, 매년마다 기상이변이 더 심해지는 것 같습니다. 세상에는 너무 많은 문제가 있다는 것을 인지하는 순간, 무기력해지기 쉬운 시기인 것 같아요.
이런 혼돈의 시기에는 자고로 사회의 문제점들이 더 보이기 쉬운 법입니다. 결국 이런 문제들의 뿌리에는 우리 대부분이 살아온 시간보다 훨씬 더 오래 자라온 체계적인 문제들이 자리잡고 있습니다. 이런 체계적인 문제들은 체계에서 벗어난 문제 해결 능력이 필요한 법이고요. 사회 정의 운동은 개인과 사회의 관계를 더욱더 공정하고 정당하게 만드는 크고 작은, 조직적이고 집합적인 다양한 행동들을 의미합니다.
이렇게 정의된 사회 정의 운동은 무엇을 중점으로 두고 싸우는지에 따라 모습을 달리합니다. 인종평등을 위해 싸우던, 성평등을 위해 싸우던, 생김새는 다르지만, 이 많은 운동들이 우리 사회를 움직이는 이름없는 세력들에 이름을 붙이고, 그들을 상대로 도전하고, 그리고 보다 나은 형태로 변화시키는 '도전' 정신을 공유하고 있다고 저는 생각합니다
