저는 한국 민족국가의 발전을 서술적인 정신분석적 관점으로 살펴보는 연구 프로젝트의 일환으로 이 책을 처음 접했습니다. 이 책의 표지 속에서 저는 침묵과 침묵시키는, 두가지의 이야기를 찾았습니다. 빨치산부터 쌍용 노동자에 이르기까지, 저자들은 국가에 대한 저항의 형태와 폭력으로 뒷받침된 국가적인 서사성이 개인뿐 아니라 그들이 속한 사회에 어떤 심리적인 결과를 불러오는지 명료하게 설명합니다.
저는 이 책의 첫 부분에서 저자들이 의도적으로 언급이 억압당했던 사건들을 풀어내는 방식에 감명을 받았습니다. 공식적으로는 역사책에서, 비공식적으로는 가족들 간 이야기에서 억압당했던 그 사건들을 저자들이 하나씩 이야기해 나갑니다. 2부에서는 “일상에 재현되는 폭력과 트라우마의 메커니즘”을 점검함으로서 한국 사회와 한국 정치의 현주소를 비판적으로 재점검할 수 있도록 합니다.
이 책은 사회 정의, 특히 한국이라는 맥락에서 사회 정의에 관심이 있는 사람들에게 흥미로울 것이라고 생각합니다. 그 이유는 책에서 소개된 분석들의 최종 목표는 사회적인 차원에서 치유가 될 수 있는 모델들을 제공하는 것이기 때문입니다. 저자들은 이러한 목표를 이루기 위한 유일한 방법은 정의를 달성하는 것이라고 믿음을 가집니다. 그래서 그들은 과도적인 정의를 달성하기 위한 길과 트라우마를 둘러싼 사회적인 대화를 위한 공간을 만드는 것을 제안합니다.

“This book is a collection of papers that examines various forms of violence that occured in the workings of Korean political society, the ‘trauma’ that victims of this violence experienced, and ways to overcome such trauma. This book aims to deal with the social pain that is not reduced to personal pain, the social trauma that cannot be separated from the psychological trauma, as a matter of social healing--not healing in the psychiatrist’s office.” - Yeoksa-Bipyungsa
I initially picked up this book as part of a research project that took a psychoanalytic perspective to the narrative development of the South Korean nation-state. What I found within the covers of this book was both stories of silence and silencing. From partisans to Ssangyong laborers, the authors elucidate how forms of resistance against the state, and the state’s violence-backed mission of national narrative, can have long-lasting psychological consequences upon not only individuals but the societies they are a part of.
I was struck, in the first part of this book, by the eloquence of the authors in putting words towards events that deliberately were repressed from being retold formally, in history books and informally, in family stories. In part 2, they examine the “mechanisms of violence and trauma that are reproduced in the everyday,” which allows us to critically re-examine the current state of Korean society and politics.
I think this book would be of particular interest to those interested in social justice, especially social justice in the South Korean context, as the ultimate goal of these analyses is to provide models for healing on a societal level--which they believe is only possible through achieving justice. The authors do so by proposing paths to achieve transitional justice and creating spaces for social dialogue around trauma.
