Spotlight2월 12일, 패션프루트의 두번째 컨퍼런스 “정의로운 사회: 교육 개혁"가 많은 좋은 분들의 참여 덕분에 성황리에 마무리됐습니다. 패션프루트가 청년들의 사회 정의 인식을 높이기 위해 나아가는 만큼, 많은 청년들이 현재 경험하고 있는 교육의 문제점들과 개선점들에 대해 타일러 라쉬님, 한국다양성연구소의 김지학 소장님, 그리고 프로젝트 위기의 백진우 대표님과 이야기를 나눠보았는데요, 그 중 몇가지 생각들을 가져와 보았습니다.
한국다양성연구소의 김지학 소장:
“학교, 교실, 교육은 어떻게 변해야 할까요? 주어진 대로 순응하는 사람이 아닌, “왜?”라는 질문이 가능한 사람을 만드는 교육. 내 삶과 다른 사람의 삶, 사회구조에 대한 다양성 관점—교차하는 권력에 대한 관점—그리고 이것을 기반으로 평등을 실천할 수 있는 사람을 만드는 교육이 되어야 합니다.”
질문과 대화가 필요한 체험적 교육, 통합교육 (장애인, 비장애인 학생이 같이 배우는 공간), 개별화 그리고 협업과 연대가 가능한 공간을 만드는 공간적인 변화, 그리고 대학교가 필요 없는 사회를 만드는 제도적인 변화를 통해 이런 미래를 향해 나아갈 수 있을 것 같습니다.
프로젝트 위기, 백진우 대표:
“사실 모두가 암기 위주, 까먹는 공부를 하는 것에 대해 위기 의식을 갖고 있더라고요. 하지만 더 중요한거는 학생도 떳떳한 것은 아니더라고요. 우리 안에도 인정받기 위한 공부를 좋아하는 마음이 있으니까요…그럼 어떻게 바뀌어야 하는데? 라는 생각이 드는데, 생각해볼만한 점들을 재시해보려고 해요. 학생주도 교육개혁을 “학교를 다니는 사람”이 “학교를 개선하는 방법"이 아닌, 배우는 사람이 배우고 가르치는 활동을 개선한다는 일이라고 생각을 바꾸면, 많은 것들이 바뀌여요.”
“나부터, 일상 속에서 날 성장시키는 공부를 실천해보는건 어떨까요?”
혁신적인 소재를 혁신적인 방법으로 배워야 한다고 생각하지 말고, 매일 가는 교실 속 국영수 수업 속에서도 배움을 대하는 우리의 마음가짐을 돌아보는 방법을 생각해 보는것, 위기지학. 그것이 교육 개혁의 물결을 퍼트리는 방법 중 하나가 될 수도 있습니다.

우리들의 일상에 자연스럽게 스며들어 있는 것들에 질문하고 저항하는 것이 나 자신부터 시작하는 교육개혁이라고 해주셔서 좋았습니다.
모두가 할 수 있는 공부! 그리고 재밌게 성취감 있는 공부를 오랫동안 못하고 있었어서 우울했는데 다시 한번 나를 위해 공부할려고 마음 다짐하게 된것 같아요!
남아있는 생각들: “"교육"이란 자본 등 시스템을 따라서 사는 삶이 아닌 “내 삶” 을 찾을 수 있는 능력을 기르는 과정” 하지만 “왜를 질문하며 저항하며 살아도 경제적인 걱정없이 생존할 수 있는 방법이 있을까요?”
이번 컨퍼런스에 대한 참가자 소감:
세시간이 짧게 느껴질 만큼 너무 재밌고 유익한 시간이었습니다!
그동안 생각해온 교육에 대한 패러다임이 180도 바뀐 소중한 시간이었습니다. 연사 분들과 자리 마련해주신 스태프 분들께 모두 감사의 말씀 드립니다!
앞으로도 계속 다양한 아이디어들, 개인이 삶에서 실천하고 구조도 바꾸어가는데 목소리를 모아보아요~
On February 12, Passionfruit successfully hosted our 2nd conference, “Towards a Just Society: Education Reform,” thanks to our wonderful participants. In line with Passionfruit’s aim to increase youth’s awareness of social justice issues, we spoke with Diversity Korea director Kim Jihak, the Wigi Project CEO Baek Jinwoo, and Tyler Rasch regarding current education issues prevalent to youth. Here, we recap some of those conversations.
“How should our schools, classrooms, and education change? The answer is– into an education system that encourages people to ask “why” instead of conforming to given circumstances. It must be education that forms individuals who practice equality based on a perspective of diversity in one’s own life, other’s lives, and social structures—based on a perspective of intersecting power.

Of course, everyone feels a sense of anxiety when constantly studying to memorize and then forget. However, what’s even more important is that students aren’t innocent either. We like studying because of our desire to be recognized [...] I then ask myself, “how should we change?” Here are some things to think about. A lot changes when we see that student-led educational reform is not a way for “those attending school” to “improve the school”, but a way for learners to improve learning and teaching activities.
“Starting with myself, how about practicing education in my daily life that makes me grow?”
Rather than having to learn innovative materials in innovative ways, our commitment is to think about our mindset towards learning in our daily Korean, English, and Math classrooms; learning for one’s own growth. This is one of the ways we can start the education reform wave.
After this session, have your thoughts changed at all?
“I liked how you said that educational reform is a procress, starting with ourselves, of asking questions and resisting things that naturally permeate our daily lives.”
“Studying that anyone is capable of! I was once depressed because I couldn't study very well for a long time, but I think I’ve decided I can study for myself again!”
Remaining questions
“‘Education’ is the process of developing the means to find ‘my life’ instead of living according to systems- such as capitalism… but is there a way to survive without economic worries even while resisting and questioning?”
