Spotlight386세대. 민주화 운동에 기여했던 86학번 세대를 일컬어 부르는 말.
독재타도와 민주화를 외치던 80년대의 대학생은 이제 더 이상 학생도, 30대도 아니다.
시대가 변했고, 그들도 변했다.
그 시절, 부패한 독재정권을 향해 목숨을 건 저항을 했던 무리의 리더들은 어느새 동일한 비판의 대상이 되었고, 더 나은 세상을 향해 나아가려는 물결을 방해하는 진부한 세대가 되었다.
그 세대가 이룬 꿈을 우러러보던 우리는 이제 그들의 현재를 원망하며 결단코 그들이 되지 않으리라 다짐한다.
어쩌면 한 세기를 넘게 간직해 온 염원을 저버린 이들이야 그에 걸맞는 대가를 받아 마땅하겠지만, 푸르렀던 신념을 여전히 지키는 이들까지 우리의 책망을 받을 필요는 없을 것이다.
앞으로의 길에 대해 조언을 구하던 내게 어느 분이 말씀하셨다.
“장강의 뒷물결은 앞물결을 밀며 흐른다.”
더 공정한 사회를 향해 면면히 흘러온 이 강의 물줄기는 오래 전에 시작되어 지금까지 이어진다. 시간이 흘러, 세차던 물결이 약해지고 환경의 변화를 못 이겨 일부가 사라져도, 잔류는 새로운 지류의 합류로 멈추지 않고 흘러간다.
지나 온 세월 동안 강류의 자리가 견고히 잡혀 있었기에 방향을 잃지 않고 흘러갈 수 있는 것이다.
자연의 섭리를 따라 앞서가던 세대는 뒷세대를 위해 자리를 내어주고, 뒷세대는 현재를 극복하고 미래를 향해 흘러간다. 변화를 이끄는 주력들의 자연스러운 세대교체가 이루어진다 하더라도 결국 우리는 한 강을 이룬다.
강류에 휩싸여 우리가 어떻게 여기에 이르렀는지, 곧 합류할 이들을 위해 무엇을 준비해야 하는지 잊지 않기를, 그리고 서로를 힘입고 나아가 우리가 그리던 바다에 함께 다다르기를.
“우리가 장강이든, 보이지 않는 깊은 산 계곡의 시내이든 맑은 물을 담고 계속 흐를 수 있기를...”
“386 Generation.” A term describing the generation of students leading the democratization movement of the 80s.
The students who cried for the overthrow of the dictatorial regime are no longer in college nor in their 30’s.
As times changed, so did they.
Those who led the fight against corrupt leadership have become the subjects of the same criticism; have become a stagnant generation obstructing the tides of change.
Our eyes of admiration are now filled with resentment as we vow never to follow their steps.
While those who have failed the hopes of decades ought to face deserved consequences, I wonder if the silent vanguards of their steadfast values should be subject to the same scrutiny.
I received these words as I asked for advice on forthcoming roads —
“The river waves behind drive the waves ahead.”
This river towards a more equitable society began centuries ago and its streams continue on to today. Though mighty waves may wane and some may dissipate from changing environments, what remains carries on, joined and renourished by new tributaries.
We carry on, guided by the unwavering direction molded by currents of the past.
By nature’s ways, preceding generations make space for those who follow; following generations overcome our present to flow into the future. Though natural generational shifts may occur in the leaders of change, we ultimately comprise a single river.
May the tides not blind us from what led us here; from what we must do for those to come.
And may we be held by one another until we reach the sea we so longed for together.
“Whether we be an effervescent river or a stream hidden in an unknown valley, may we always carry clear water and flow on…”
